Melton Mowbray railway station serves the town of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, England.
The station is on CrossCountry's Birmingham to Stansted Airport line between Leicester and Peterborough.
There is also a rail line towards Nottingham that runs via Old Dalby, but it stops short of Nottingham railway station at the edge of the suburb of West Bridgford. This is electrified with overheads, has its own control centre. This dates from when British Rail Research developed it as a test track for the Advanced Passenger Train, having been taken out of use some years before. It has, more recently, been used for Virgin Trains' Pendolinos' testing as well as being lined up for Metronet to use in the testing of tube trains built by Bombardier in Derby.
Services
From Melton Mowbray there is generally an hourly service, operated by CrossCountry each day towards Leicester, and Birmingham New Street westbound and Peterborough, Cambridge and Stansted Airport eastbound as well as additional services in the PM peak.
Connections at Leicester Station to London St Pancras International are ideal at ten minutes, traveling time end to end can be as little as one and a half hours.
Despite managing the station, East Midlands Trains only operates three daily services to the station: two early morning services to Norwich and a late night service to Nottingham. However, from December 2008 they plan to run a return train to London via the new station at Corby during the week.
East Midlands Trains are looking at the possibilities of introducing a northbound service from its new station at Corby from 2010 which would call also at Melton Mowbray. This would be a major plus for both towns - giving Corby a northbound service and Melton a direct London service each hour.[1]
