Syston railway station is a railway station serving the town of Syston in Leicestershire, England. The station is located on the Midland Main Line between Leicester to Loughborough, 103¾ miles from London St Pancras.
It was built in 1840 for the Midland Counties Railway, which shortly joined the North Midland Railway and the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway to form the Midland Railway.
The original single storey building was replaced with a more substantial structure by the Midland and then closed in 1968. This structure, which had been hidden by fencing for many years was dismantled and rebuilt at Midland Railway, Butterley with the help of David Wilson Homes, who erected a housing estate over the old station land in 2006.
Slightly north is Syston Junction for the branch to Peterborough from Leicester built in 1846, In 1854 a northward curve was added.
The station reopened on 27th May 1994 as part of phase one of the Ivanhoe Line.
- The station is served by East Midlands Trains Connect services, who operate local services from Leicester to Lincoln via Loughborough and Nottingham.
- The 15:42 northbound service continues from Lincoln to Sleaford.
- East Midlands Trains Mainline services from Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham and London run through at high speed, but do not stop, as Syston's only platform is on the local 'slow' line. Interchange with Mainline services can be made at Leicester and Loughborough.
Services are formed using diesel multiple units of Classes 153, 156 or 158
This is a good station to watch steam train excursions coming through at speed when one runs, there can be a lot of photographers and train spotters on the platform. The fast lines are those at the left of the picture. The platform line is the slow and, for reasons of safety, it should be noted that it is bidirectional.
